Our data was based off of the two surveys we gave to the 3rd grade class. The first one was to see their daily eating habits and if they thought they made healthy choices at school. A couple of the questions asked much sugar and junk food the kids think they eat on a weekly bases. 10 kids said they eat it once a day, 10 kids said they eat it 1 time a week, 8 kids said they eat it 2 - 3 times a week, and 7 said they eat it less then 1 time a week. After the presentation and them making their own balanced bowl we had them fill out a second survey which asked if our presentation would help them make healthier choices in the future. Almost all of our feedback was positive except one kid that said no. It was interesting to see that the kids eat sugar that often and also that all of the kids payed attention very well during presentation and want to eat healthier from it. We think we could've done better at making out graphs to show the actual the question that we asked to make it easier to understand when we were presenting. However we think that we should've also done both of the same question before and after the presentation instead of having them be similar. Overall, our data we collected was positive and gave us the information we needed.
This week we finally went to the Village School to complete our project. Before we went, we had decided that making sandwiches is too difficult, so instead we had the kids make their own bowl that included protein, dairy, healthy fats, grains, fruits, and vegetables. Each kid got to pick what they wanted to put in the bowl off of what we brought from each of the food groups. We went on Friday, May 12th and when we arrived we went to set up the tables with food and the slide show. When the kids came in we passed out our first survey for them to complete and then explain how to eat healthy with the slide show we made. After we explained them the different food groups and showed the ways to make their lunches healthier they made their own bowl. The kids all seemed to enjoy everything they ate and they after we had them complete a final survey on how they felt the activity impacted them and how much they enjoyed their bowl. Our trip to village was a success and the kids learned more about healthy eating.
This week we found a way to get numbered data on the impact our project made on the kids we did the activity with. We created two surveys, one for before we come in to see what they eat regularly for lunch and see how we can help them eat healthier. The other survey is after we meet and do the activity so we can see what the progress the activity had on the kids. The most exciting part of this week is that we set a date with the village school and will be completing the activity Friday, May 12, 2017. We are bringing the sandwich materials for all the kids to complete. We are also planning on testing the sandwich making with Sophie's younger sisters to see how long it takes so we can complete the entire project and activity with the kids in the time we have. We are planning to go during our science class and nutrition or lunch. We are very excited to finally know and have a date set for the activity we are completing with students.
Throughout this week we have been communicating with Village School and we have dates set to go and talk and interact with the kids, Friday, May 12. Sophie talked to Village on the phone and scheduled a time to meet with them. We are going to talk to them and do a hands on activity to make sandwiches. We will bring many sandwich items for the kids to use and create their own healthy sandwich. We also got a sample of their menu to help us understand their choices and how we can help them have a healthy meal.
Our group has chosen to work with lack of nutrition for children. Our original plan was to try to help provide for healthy vegetarian options for the pavilion. We asked the chef about what options they had but they seemed to have a lot more then we realized. After that we started thinking about what else we could do to help eating healthy become easier. So, instead we decided to try to work with students to start eating healthier for lunch at school. Our plan is to work with third graders from Village School and talk to the staff to help provide healthy lunch options and help tweak their current options to become healthier. We will talk to the kids about eating healthier and show them how important it is to choose a healthy options and to balance their food intake during the week. We will pick an activity to do with them to make what they think is a healthy sandwich that they will enjoy. After we will show them what a really healthy sandwich is and if their option they chose is not healthy then we will teach them how they can change it. Our goal in the end is to show kids that eating healthy is a lot easier and how they can balance their diet from the choices they have for lunch at school.
